No, you didn’t read that wrong. We do have a chance of seeing some accumulating snow possible. For the metro, this is a couple of weeks earlier than usual. This is NOT comparable to the Halloween Blizzard from 1991. Listed below are the expected timings of the snow, weather alerts, and potential totals.
WEATHER ALERTS: The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of the state. All due to snow and potential blowing snow. Roads will be slippery during the morning commute on Friday. Low visibility can be expected in the areas with blowing snow. The map below is the latest winter weather alerts as of 10 PM Thursday evening.
IMPACTS:
Timing: This system will affect the Friday morning commute, with the snow starting very early Friday morning into the commute.
Wind: Wind gusts as high as 45 MPH are possible, which may cause widespread drifting and blowing snow.
Snow Totals: For the metro, totals will be lesser than areas about 50 miles west. Expect anywhere from a coating to a few inches in the Twin Cities. Higher totals for areas West and North West of the metro area. Areas west inside the Winter Weather Advisory will get the most, while areas in Wisconsin and East of the metro will see mainly rain rather than snow. Warmer ground temperatures will prevent massive accumulations as this will NOT be a “stick around for a while” type of event. The map below from the National Weather Service has the totals projected as of 5 PM Thursday evening.
